Centenary with new sustainable homes
The first homes on Machineweg in Aalsmeer will be delivered this month. In total, housing corporation Eigen Haard is building 63 rental homes in the ‘Red Village’. It has been exactly 100 years since the original homes were completed.
In total, the new ‘Red Village’ will house 63 rental homes. Of the 46 single-family homes, Eigen Haard rents out 13 in the middle segment. These are mainly intended for transferees from social housing. The 17 social rental apartments together form a building of three floors with an elevator. A number of tenants from the old houses are returning.
Architecture respects the past
The architecture of the new homes refers to the original homes that were built in 1921 by the ‘Woningbouwvereeniging Volksbelang’. The characteristic red roofs and replicas of the gable stones with birds can also be seen in the new building. ‘That makes this delivery extra festive,’ says director Vera Luijendijk of Eigen Haard. ‘We are celebrating the centenary of the ‘Red Village’ with sustainable new homes. Those homes respect the past and represent everything that public housing has brought and brings to our country.’
Affordable housing added
‘The completion of the ‘Red Village’ is a great milestone in our housing development,’ says alderman for spatial planning Bart Kabout. ‘Aalsmeerders love this striking part of the village. This district is a good example of how we bring old traditional elements back into a modern one. And of course we are very happy that 17 extra homes have been built, both social housing and homes in the middle segment.’

A new start
Rinky, Elsa and their daughter Chloë are new residents of the ‘Red Village’. They proudly stand in front of their new home with a beautiful tile of a pheasant next to the door. ‘We’ve been looking for this for a long time. Our living situation was quite difficult and this feels like a new start. The apple tree we received today is a symbol of a new beginning in that regard.’
